May The Investment Force Be With You
Economics item by Steve Selengut (7/2/09)

Investment markets got you down, Bunkie? Been blown away by derivative stun guns?  When will portfolio market values move back to 2007 levels--- and then what will you do about it?

America, the Silly Nation
Society item by Alan Caruba (7/2/09)

As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day, we will hear about our Founding Fathers, about those who fought our wars to preserve and safeguard our nation, and other men and women who contributed to the nation’s greatness.

No Jewish Identity
Culture War item by Gary Krasner (6/30/09)

Antisemitism is rampant in Europe, with record numbers of attacks and even killings of Jews----for being Jewish!  Hence the name “antisemitism.” An antisemitic incident occurred in NYC.  But listening to the lamentations of NYS Speaker of the Assembly Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan), you’d never know it was a hate crime against Jews.

Eco-Minister Flunks Global Warming Test
Global Warming item by Dennis T. Avery (6/30/09)

CHURCHVILLE, VA - When last we heard from Australian Senator Steve Fielding, he had paid his own way to a Washington, D.C. conference of climate skeptics - and armed himself with some questions about why Australia needs heavy carbon taxes on its energy use.

A New Religion Masquerading As Christianity, Part 2
Religion item by Marsha West (6/30/09)

When I was a liberal I loved mocking the Bible.  I’d get giddy arguing with conservatives over Bible stories that to me were ludicrous.  One example is the biblical account of Moses parting the Red Sea to help the Israelites escape Pharaoh’s pursuing army.  Boy did I scoff at that one!  I categorized Christians who bought into the miraculous signs and wonders in the Bible as “unenlightened twits.”

The Peterbilt Principle
Bird-Brain Flu item by Thomas Lindaman (6/28/09)

One of the best aspects of America in my opinion is the fact that we are a nation of dreamers. Every day, men and women wake up, brush their teeth, and work a little on their little piece of the American Dream. Recently, those same people woke up as they usually do, but there was something different.

Save the Earth! Get Rid of Your Refrigerator!
GreeenIsm item by Alan Caruba (6/28/09)

On June 22, Greenpeace USA put out the word that “A new study published today in the Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences shows that refrigerant chemicals, so called F-gases, are a more dangerous global warming threat than previously predicted.”

The Intolerance of the Left: An Interview with Harry Stein
Progressivism item by Bernard Chapin (6/28/09)

He has been a professional writer and editor since he co-founded The American Mercury in 1972. Mr. Stein achieved great success in 2000 with his memoir entitled, How I Accidentally Joined the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy : (and Found Inner Peace). He has also written works of fiction like The Magic Bullet, Hoopla, and Infinity’s Child. Mr. Stein’s articles have appeared in numerous publications such as The New York Times Book Review, The New York Times Magazine, GQ, Playboy, New York Magazine, American Heritage, Men’s Health, The Wall Street Journal, Esquire, and The New Republic.

Left-Wing Hyperbole: Know what Healthcare is Just like? Slavery
Health Care item by Warner Todd Huston (6/28/09)

See, we know that it isn’t wild-eyed, hyperbole to say that slavery is “just like” our current healthcare debate because Glenn W. Smith(1) of the extremist left-wing site Firedoglake helpfully tells us that “this is not hyperbole.” See? Conflict solved. I’m glad we settled THAT one, I have to tell ya.

The Obama Olympics
Sports item by Aaron Goldstein (6/28/09)

Last week, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley led a delegation to Lausanne, Switzerland where the Windy City made its bid in front of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to host the 2016 Summer Olympics.  Chicago is competing against Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo to host the games.  The IOC will announce the host city on October 2nd in Copenhagen

‘Do We Have A Crisis Weary America?’
Politics item by Thomas D. Segel (6/25/09)

Harlingen, Texas, June 22, 2009:  You can hear the murmurs at the Koffee Klatch each morning when farmers gather to talk about their crops and concerns about our government.  You can hear the same thing being expressed by businessmen at Rotary luncheon meetings.  It doesn’t even escape the casual comments offered in conversations following women’s Bible Study gatherings.  Americans are really starting to get weary of constantly hearing the Obama Administration’s chatter about what the Democrats perceive as our latest and greatest crisis.

Overheated White House Campaigns
GreeenIsm item by Dennis T. Avery (6/25/09)

CHURCHVILLE, VA - It was only a matter of time before First Lady Michelle Obama sprang to the wall of the White House Organic Garden and demanded more organic food - a heartfelt campaign fully as sincere as her husband’s ongoing demand that the affluent countries fight off man-made global warming by taxing away most of their energy. However, both the First Lady’s and the President’s campaigns share the same problem:  Both are based on politically-correct illusions.

US government’s climate con-job
Climate Change item by Paul Driessen (6/25/09)

Obama administration “report” on climate change is deceitful, scare-mongering, bogus science - Suppose a company doctored data, misrepresented study findings, replaced observations with computer simulations, and hired PR flacks to promote its new “wonder drug.” News stories, congressional hearings and subpoenas would be in overdrive. Fines and jail sentences would follow. And rightly so.

Mousavi, Ahmadinejad, and Israel
Middle East item by Gerald A. Honigman (6/25/09)

You know, this really isn’t difficult to understand

It’s Time To Arm The Recruiters
Society item by Jayme Evans (6/25/09)

A couple of weeks ago, while the nation was bickering over health care, Supreme Court Nominee Sonia Sotomayor and how to treat captured terrorists, a pair of domestic acts of terror shocked us out of our collective political funk and reminded us of the dangers of domestic acts of terror committed by those acting alone.

North Korea--Missile Defense--The Perfect Opportunity
National Security item by Kevin Roeten (6/21/09)

The Yomiuri Daily, Japan’s most popular paper, reported that North Korea [N. Korea Missile Hawaii] intends to launch a Taepodong-2 missile towards Hawaii sometime between 6/4 and 6/8. Even though the Taepodong-2’s range is supposedly 2000 miles, and Hawaii’s main islands are almost 4500 miles away, a launch would send a chilling message.

The Murder of Civil Life
Culture War item by Bruce Walker (6/21/09)

The putrid comments by Letterman about Sarah Palin and her daughter, and the dethronement of Carrie Prejean for the vice of honesty bring home just how savagely civil life has been murdered by the Left.  We no longer have a civil public life.  It has been crushed between pinchers of enraged nihilism and fantasy causes.  “Feminists” or the Ladies Auxiliary of Marxist Enmity (LAME) should be threatening boycotts of the CBS or demanding the de-politicization of beauty contests, but that presumes LAME cares about women:  its disciples care only about venting their private fury towards an empty life

This Isn’t The Future We Were Promised
Science item by Ann "Babe" Huggett (6/21/09)

Way back when dinosaurs ruled the Earth, way back before personal computers, way back before cyberspace became the new frontier, there was Science Fiction and I was addicted to it.  I read everything that I could get my hands on.  I cut my baby teeth on Jules Verne and H.G. Wells but came to love all of Isaac Asimov’s works, read Heinlein until dizzy, lingered over Ray Bradbury’s prose-poetry, consumed A. E. Van Vogt, enjoyed Kurt Vonnegut’s quirky extrapolations, got into compare-and-contrast mode between Aldous Huxley and George Orwell’s dystopias, fantasized my way through Tolkein and C.S. Lewis and always made a beeline for anything written by Theodore Sturgeon, Philip K. Dick, Fritz Leiber, Harlan Ellison and Larry Niven.  I was the first in line at the local news agent for the latest monthly editions of Amazing Adventures, Analog, and Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine

America’s Atmosphere of Fear, Guilt, and Restraint
  Society item by J. D. Longstreet (6/21/09)

I am absolutely convinced that had America had the government we have today back in oh, say, the late seventeen hundreds and eighteen hundreds we would never have grown into the world power we became and, in fact, were - up until last year.

Capriciousness of Government
Government item by Warner Todd Huston (6/18/09)

What ‘should’ be isn’t always what is, we all know. For instance, government is supposed to serve its people. However, more often than not government becomes a burden, an iron boot heel on the neck, and if not so egregiously oppressive at the very least it is often capricious. Today I have two examples of the capriciousness of government. One case in Chicago, a place where if government ‘isn’t’ capricious it’s big news, and Ohio, a land where capricious is government’s middle name.

Is Obama Going To Be President Or Dictator? The Outlook Is Not Encouraging
ObamaNation item by Malcolm T. Hedges (6/15/09)

Recent activities by the President and his minions suggest a Dictator mentality

Conservatives Grow in Number; Single Largest Ideological Group in America
  Politics item by OffSite (6/15/09)

Conservatives comprise the largest ideological group in the United States, with nearly twice as many Americans saying they are conservative as those claiming to be liberal, Gallup surveys reveal.

‘Will Bond Holder Revolt To Spurn New Stimulus Plan?’
  Socialism item by J. J. Jackson (6/15/09)

Liberals and their allies in the media spend a lot of time and energy these days trying to convince Americans that all is right with the world despite a panic that has now turned over in to a recession and threatens to morph into a depression.  All this under their direction of course but do not you dare bring up how their harebrained schemes to put people in houses they could not afford or give them loans they could not pay back lead to the credit panic that started all this.  These days when the stock markets are up you hear them tout how it is all because of Barack Obama’s great spending plans but never how those plans permanently enslaves our posterity to the federal government through debt.  And, typically, when the markets are down they turn the other way and find something else to talk about.  They will tell you that the day to day gyrations are not all that important in that case and fail to remind everyone that profits and dividends are down.  Sure, companies are beating expectations, but only because expectations have been lowered to levels deeper than the Marianas Trench.

‘Is Healthcare a ‘Right’?’
Health Care item by Warner Todd Huston (6/15/09)

As we all know, the Senate is gearing up to begin the debate on Obamacare. As we move forward one of the first scheduled stops will be in the Senate on June 16 as the Health Education, Labor and Pensions Committee(1) moves to begin its mark-up of the Health Care Reform Bill. But what are the basic assumptions that underlie this bill? Let’s take a look at one of them.
